Fastboot doesn't detect plugged in smartphone

First time trying to unlock a bootloader (Fairphone gen.6)

installed platform-tools manually from : https://developer.android.com/tools/releases/platform-tools

using the official documentation: https://doc.e.foundation/devices/FP6/install/

I am currently stuck at step 6 of UNLOCKING THE BOOTLOADER; all the previous steps were done without any issues.

the following block of code is copy/pasted from my linux terminal (the phone was restarted on the bootloader following step 5)

nick@name:~$ adb devices
List of devices attached
417e389a	device

nick@name:~$ fastboot devices
nick@name:~$ fastboot flashing unlock
< waiting for any device >

As you can see: fastboot doesn't detect my phone while adb does; I didn't find anything useful on the internet (except 14y old unanswered post) which is why I am posting here

I've never used a Fairphone, but the usual process is:

$ adb devices # Check the connection
$ adb reboot bootloader # Watch the device reboot into a different screen
$ fastboot devices # Should now list it

Fastboot needs the device to be in the right mode. It doesn't communicate with the ordinary ADB server on a phone. If this doesn't work, try:

$ adb devices # Check the connection
$ adb reboot bootloader # Watch the device reboot into a different screen
$ sudo fastboot devices # Should now list it
