From what I can tell, the general answers to this question seem to amount to manipulating Android's "screen_off_timeout" timer, or enabling the Developer-Mode's "stay_on" attribute.
Is there another setting where I could disable the application of the "screen-saver image", and still keep the timer? As in, I see Android's UI, and not some black sleep screen? I have my reasons for asking.

You’re right — most solutions focus on the timeout or stay-on settings. There isn’t a built-in option to completely disable the screen-saver image while keeping the timer active, but some launchers or custom ROMs might let you control it more granularly.
